Detroit emergency manager says he will modify teachers’ contract

District issues layoff notices to all 5,466 members of teachers union

From The Detroit Free Press: Robert Bobb, the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools, says he plans to use his expanded powers under to modify teacher contracts. His statement came as the district announced that it is sending layoff notices to all 5,466 members of the Detroit Federation of Teachers and non-renewal notices to 248 administrators. The layoff notices are required under the contract within 60 days of the end of the school year. In recent years, the district has issued large numbers of layoff notices this time of year as it prepares to respond to shrinking enrollment.
