Middle and high school students share facility in Detroit

At Cleveland Intermediate High School in Detroit, high school students take classes near yellow or blue lockers, and middle school students go to class where the lockers are green or red. The hassle of creating boundaries in a building that began housing seventh- through 12th-grade students last fall allows the students to share the facility while ensuring there are enough kids in the school to justify keeping it open. The arrangement also allows educators to see whether blending a middle school with a high school can also boost enrollment and standardized test scores.
