Study cites poor graduation rate in Detroit

Detroit's graduation rate -- though increasing -- again ranks worst in the nation among the largest school districts, according to a new national study. The study, from the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, showed Detroit's graduation rate for 2005 -- the most recent year available -- was just 37.5 percent, up from 24.9 percent the previous year. Some state and local officials criticized the study for not taking into account students who change school districts or transfer to charter schools. However, the report still underscores the difficulties Detroit faces in graduating students in four years from the same high school where they started in ninth grade.
