Detroit school may lose $39 million in unused grants

Detroit Public Schools could lose more than $39 million meant to pump up poor students' lagging academic performance because it has to be spent by June and is still sitting in the district's coffers. The money is part of about $140 million in federal money from programs that give extra money to schools attended by large numbers of children who qualify for free or reduced lunches. It's earmarked for reading teachers, tutors, books and supplies, and other academic needs. Superintendent Connie Calloway says she learned about the problem a little over a week ago, and immediately urged bureaucratic staff to cut through red tape to get the money spent.
