Secretary of Education says mayoral takeover has been successful in Chicago

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan says Detroit's next mayor must take accountability for the city's schools, and he challenged the Detroit district to compete for grants that will be awarded to schools that try innovative reforms to improve student performance. City voters will choose a mayor in May. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has called for mayoral control of the Detroit Public Schools. Duncan, who was CEO of Chicago public schools from 2001 to 2009, says Mayor Daley's takeover of the public school system there has been successful.
