Voters in theEdison (N.J.) school district have rejected a $57.8 million bond proposal. The largest portion of the referendum was $25 million needed for a new school. Work at James Madison Intermediate and Woodbrook and Ben Franklin elementary schools, which included classrooms, bathrooms, expanded kitchens and renovated multi-purpose rooms, was expected to cost about $9 million each.

FROM AUGUST 2008: Edison (N.J.) school board officials have agreed to move its scheduled $57 million bond election from Sept. 30--Rosh Hashanah--to Dec. 9. Members of the Jewish community expressed outrage that the vote was scheduled on one of the religion's holiest days. They asked the board to reschedule. The $57 million proposal would allow for construction of a new elementary school and additions to three other schools to address classroom crowding. ( Newark Star-Ledger)
