Eastern Michigan picks new public safety chief

Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti has tapped the nearby Ann Arbor Police Department to find the new head of public safety for a school that gained infamy for its handling of the apparent slaying of a student on campus in 2006. Greg O'Dell, 50, an Ann Arbor deputy chief who graduated from EMU in 1992, is set to become executive director of public safety on Feb. 7. He succeeds former chief Cindy Hall, who was dismissed last year after an investigation into how the university reacted to the killing of a student in a residence hall. Investigators immediately treated the case as a homicide, but university officials did not release that information until more than two months later.
