Chris Whittle, who helped create Edison Schools, is among the backers

From The New York Times: Even though it won't open until September 2012, more than 1,200 families have applied for early admission to a for-profit private school in New York City co-founded by the entrepreneur who helped create Edison Schools. Avenues: The World School expects to have the 1,320 spots available from nursery through ninth grade. But as of now, the school's home remains a construction site and only eight of 180 teachers have been hired.
