From The Miami Herald: The family of 15-year-old Amanda Collette, who was shot and killed at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 2008, has sued the Broward County school district, contending that the girl's death was preventable. Lawyers for the family say Dillard, a performing arts magnet school, had hand-held metal detectors but did not use them on Nov. 12, 2008, when the assailant brought a .22-caliber pistol to school and shot Collette in the back. The suit also contends that a teacher who had been told that Collette was in danger failed to take action to protect the student.
NOVEMBER 2008: A 15-year-old girl has been charged in the shooting death of one of her closest friends on the campus of Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Teah Wimberly, of Fort Lauderdale, is charged with first-degree murder and discharging a weapon on school property. She is being held at the police station. Amanda Collette, 15, was shot in a hallway this morning shortly before 11 a.m., as students were changing classes. The shooting took place in part of the campus dedicated to the school's performing arts magnet program. Both students were reportedly in the program.
