Desegregation order calls for Tennessee district to build new elementary, close 2 existing schools

News release from the U.S. Justice Department: A federal judge has approved a school desegregation consent decree for the Fayette County (Tenn.) school district that calls for closing two elementary schools and constructing a new elementary school. Under the agreement, the district must revise attendance zone lines and create a magnet program at the elementary school with the highest percentage of African-American enrollment. It also must establish a controlled choice program by the start of the 2014-15 school year for three of its six elementary schools so that all three schools achieve desegregated enrollments.
