Pilot program at Clearwater High provides e-reader for every student

From The St. Petersburg Times: The jury is still out on whether the pilot program at Clearwater (Fla.) High School to put a Kindle e-reader in the hands of every student is improving student performance, but six months into the trial, students and teachers say the "Kindlezation" of their school has yielded clear benefits — and limitations. Some classes are book-free, but others are book-bound as publishers scramble to digitize materials. Some teachers have been slow to adopt, others have eagerly embraced it. But one thing is clear: The devices are blending in, being used as often as a pen or pencil. SEPTEMBER 2010...from The St. Petersburg Times: The 2,000-plus students at Clearwater High School in Clearwater, Fla., have received their very own, personalized Kindle e-readers. The devices are loaded with e-textbooks personally tailored to each student’s class schedule and free students from having to lug a backpack full of books.

JUNE 2010...from The St. Petersburg Times: Clearwater (Fla.) High School next year will replace traditional textbooks with e-readers. The gadgets will be fully loaded with all the textbooks students need, minus all the paper. School officials are negotiating with Amazon Kindle to try to equip all 2,100 students with the 10-ounce devices this fall.
