Florida public school enrollment drops for the 4th straight year

Sept. 23, 2009
Miami district reports a slight increase, and Broward County numbers decline again

From The Miami Herald: Florida's school enrollment has dropped for a fourth straight year, but less than predicted. Enrollment has declined by 4,400 students out of 2.6 million -- less than two-tenths of 1 percent. That compares with last year's drop of 36,500 students, or nearly 1.4 percent.

ALSO: The Broward County (Fla.) school district's declining enrollment continues to slide, though by a smaller margin than in recent years, and the Miami-Dade district saw its numbers tick up a bit. Based on the enrollment count taken Monday, Broward, the nation's sixth largest system, had 255,203 students -- just 535 fewer than the same time last school year. That's tiny compared with drops of a few thousand over the last couple of years -- and more than 8,000 between 2005 and 2006. In Miami-Dade, the nation's fourth-largest system, enrollment increased slightly after years of decline. That district has 339,744 students, about 300 more than at the same time last year.
