Black wasn’t Bloomberg’s first choice for chancellor, sources say

From The New York Times: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to persuade Geoffrey Canada, the prominent Harlem education leader, to be chancellor of the city’s school system, but Canada turned it down, according to two people with direct knowledge of the discussions. Bloomberg has appointed publishing executive Cathleen Black, and those who oppose the selection have seized on her lack of familiarity with the public education system.
