From The St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Gillespie (Ill.) Community Unit School District #7 is suing the architect of the Benld, Ill., elementary school that was wrecked earlier this year by coal mine subsidence. The district is trying to recover the costs of building a new school and other damages. The suit contends that the architect, Wight and Co., and the Union Pacific Railroad, the successor to the old Chicago and North Western Railroad that owned the Superior Coal Co. which had mined the coal under the Benld school, failed to take proper measures to ensure that the 7-year-old school would not be damaged by mine subsidence. The $9 million school was so extensively damaged in the March subsidence that it was unsafe to continue to use. The school's nearly 700 pupils had to finish the school year at other schools in Gillespie.
