Incident is first killing on Blacksburg campus since 2007 massacre

A graduate student fromChina has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a female student at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. It is the first killing there since a deadly mass shooting in 2007. An electronic alert system, revamped after the massacre, was used Wednesday night after the slaying. It warned students to stay in place while police investigated the stabbing. They were cleared to resume normal activity about an hour later. The victim, who also was a graduate student but was not identified, was stabbed to death at a cafe in the Graduate Life Center. Police believe she knew the man accused of attacking her, Haiyang Zhu, 25. He was charged with first-degree murder and was being held without bond. To read The Associated Press article, click here. REACTION: Virginia Tech President Charles Steger issues a letter to the campus community: "An act of violence like this one brings back memories of the April 16 tragedy and I have no doubt that many of us feel especially distraught," it reads in part.
