A contentious proposal to privatize custodians in the Grosse Pointe (Mich.) public school system could be off the table if their union ratifies a plan to pick up more health care costs and retirement benefits. The plan to replace custodians with a private company caused an outcry from parents in the 8,900-student district. A tentative two-year deal between Grosse Pointe Public Schools and the custodians' union this week would keep the district from privatizing the services, but with heavy concessions for the workers.
