Military recruiters are frequently given free rein in New York City public schools and allowed into classes in violation of the school system’s regulations, according to a report released by the Manhattan borough president and the New York Civil Liberties Union. The group says the city’s Department of Education has exercised almost no oversight over how much access recruiters had to students at high schools.

Earlier: The Pittsburgh school board has tightened restrictions on recruiters who visit district high schools. The policy change was driven by concerns about high-pressure tactics by military recruiters. Recruiters now must register with an administrator after arriving at a school. recruiters are prohibited from using contests, drawings or lotteries, or giving money or gifts, except minor promotional items or scholarships. Because federal law requires that the military have the same access as other recruiters, the change also affects companies and colleges who court students at high schools. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
