Groveland, Fla., backs away from charter school plans

The Groveland, Fla., City Council has canceled its contract with Charter Schools USA to build a charter school in the city. Charter School USA originally agreed to handle most of the school construction, but later asked the city to provide financing through $17 million in municipal bonds. Plans had called for a k-8 school with a 1,400-student enrollment. The city council was hoping to build a charter school after Lake County School Board indicated to city officials that Groveland wasn't slated for a new school until at least 2011.
