Class sizes would rise; workers would have 3 furlough days
From The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Gwinnett County (Ga.) School District plans to trim $251 million in expenses next year to keep property taxes from rising. At the same time, enrollment is expected to increase by 1,633 students to about 161,000 as the district opens and staffs seven new schools. The proposed budget cuts represent a 12.5 percent decrease from this year's $2 billion spending plan. The proposed budget savings would come from increasing class sizes by one student; forgoing salary increases; having three furlough days for all employees except bus drivers and food service workers; and continuing a hiring freeze.
