Hand scans part of security at Middle Tennessee State

Students and staff members atMiddle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro are providing hand scans as part of an identification system for gaining access to the school's recreation center. In addition to an eight-digit identification number for their "BlueID" cards, people seeking entry to the rec center will need to scan their hands. Unlike a Social Security number, the hand codes are not unique; two people with similarly shaped hands could have the same scanner identification. While the scanners will be only in the rec center this year, the system could be used for 24-hour computer labs and other areas of the campus, school officials say.
