Some question proliferation of charter schools in Harlem

Although there are relatively few charter schools inNew York City, their proliferation in the Harlem neighborhood has made it a mecca of a national educational reform movement. Charter schools are a major force in the community, with 24 of them serving 6,000 children. The neighborhood also has about 70 traditional public schools, 14 Catholic schools and 16 other private schools. Critics say charter schools unfairly deprive neighborhood schools of some of the best students, and question the rapid expansion.
