Preservationists object to University of Hawaii building plans

Plans for a new $38 million fitness center and gym at theUniversity of Hawaii-Manoa have run into opposition from preservationists that say the university should not destroy the second-oldest building on campus. To build the planned two-story 56,000-square-foot facility, the university would tear down several buildings, including the former Engineering Materials Testing Laboratory, which was built in 1915.
