Freshman class of 112 begins at Henry Ford Academy Power House High

Henry Ford Academy: Power House High School opened today in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood and welcomed its first class of 112 ninth-grade students. The school will eventually serve 460 students in grades 9-12 Henry Ford Academy: Power House High is a partnership led by Homan Square, a community development project on the site of the original Sears, Roebuck and Co. world headquarters, and Henry Ford Learning Institute (HFLI), a non-profit organization dedicated to creating public schools in public spaces. Power House High is part of Chicago Public Schools' Renaissance 2010 initiative, which is working to launch 100 new public schools by 2010. Power House High is based on the successful Henry Ford Academy education reform model, first used at the Henry Ford Academy in Dearborn, Mich.

RELATED: Little Flower, a onetime Catholic school on Chicago's South Side, closed 14 years ago. Now it has been reborn as a charter high school. The old building went through a $16 million renovation to become the Chicago International Charter School, Ralph Ellison campus. Funded by municipal bonds, the renovated structure boasts new additions of a gymnasium, cafeteria, science labs and art, math and music rooms. A dramatic, all-glass addition to the structure features quotes from author Ralph Ellison's award-winning book, Invisible Man, etched into the glass.
