From The New York Times: The image of the Henry Viscardi School, a school for students with disabilities in Albertson, N.Y., has gone from outstanding to disreputable. An audit by the New York state comptroller’s office concluded that the school misused $835,074 in 2008 and 2009, much of it going toward the $1.25 million in salary and benefits paid to Edmund L. Cortez, the chief executive officer. And after the state demanded the money be returned, the school announced that nine staff members would be laid off or have their hours cut — partly because of the disallowed salary expenditures.
