Interior department agrees to fix environmental problems at Indian schools

Agreement with EPA calls for 72 schools on Indian tribal lands to get upgrades

News release from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: The U.S. Department of the Interior has agreed to correct environmental problems at schools and public water systems on Indian tribal lands. The Indian Affairs Office will correct all of the alleged violations at 72 schools and 27 water systems. The Interior department will establish an environmental compliance auditing program and an environmental management system to improve environmental practices at all of its Bureau of Indian Education schools and Bureau of Indian Affairs public water systems serving these schools. The settlement affects 60 tribes throughout the United States.
