JUNE 2011...from The Joplin Globe: School districts in and around Joplin, Mo., are trying to get a handle on how much the devastating May 22 tornado will affect student enrollment when classes resume in August. Joplin school officials estimate that 54 percent of the district’s 7,700 students were in the path of the tornado. Superintendent C.J. Huff has said all are welcome in Joplin schools when classes resume on Aug. 17, regardless of where their parents have moved. Presumably, some parents who were displaced will enroll their children in the district where they now are living. Superintendents in neighboring districts also are unclear whether they will see higher enrollment because of families relocating.
