Ruling clears the way for Slaughter Community Charter School

From The Baton Rouge Advocate: A judge has granted the East Feliciana Parish (La.) School Board permission to open a charter school. Approval of the Slaughter Community Charter School comes a few days after a judge approved plans to consolidate all district high school students on one campus, and all district middle school students at another facility.

EARLIER...from The Baton Rouge Advocate: All public high school students in the East Feliciana Parish (La.) district can be consolidated this fall at an existing complex in Jackson, U.S. District Judge James J. Brady has ruled. And all of the parish’s middle school students can be consolidated in Clinton at that city’s vacated high school. That means 30 teachers and 35 other school employees will lose their jobs. The moves were requested by the school board to address a projected $2.1 million budget shortfall. But plaintiffs in the school system’s 57-year-old desegregation suit challenged the consolidation.

MARCH 2010...from The Baton Rouge Advocate: The East Feliciana Parish (La.) School Board has voted to consolidate the parish’s two high schools and two middle schools. Beginning next school year, the consolidated high school will be in Jackson at the site of Jackson High School. The middle school will be in Clinton at the site of Clinton High School. Superintendent Douglas Beauchamp says the system faces a $2.18 million budget deficit for the 2010-11 school year. Consolidating the high schools and middle schools would save the system about $2.19 million next year.
