Judge blocks creation of municipal school districts in Memphis suburbs

Several suburbs did not want to be a part of merged city-county school system

From The Memphis Commercial Appeal: A federal judge has blocked suburban municipalities in Shelby County, Tenn., from creating their own school districts. Judge Samuel "Hardy" Mays ruled specifically against a 2012 state law that allowed creation of municipal school districts and school boards. Referendums to create municipal districts, approved by voters in August, are thrown out, along with the school board elections held on Nov. 6 in the municipalities. Several suburbs tried to establish their own districts to avoid being part of a merged Memphis-Shelby County district.
