Empty building vexes Western Michigan University

Western Michigan University is trying to figure out what to do with a vacant four-story building in Kalamazoo that it acquired 10 years ago. When the university took control of the former Northwest Unit of the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital in May 1998, it talked about using the building for research offices, library storage or other uses, but none of that has come to pass. In the meantime, people can be seen on You Tube videos exploring the empty facility. The school has erected a chain-linked fence topped with barbed wire and bricked up the building's first two floors, but trespassers and thieves still find their way in..
