Higher education officials inKansas have identified $440 million worth of projects that are “shovel ready” if the federal government approves an economic stimulus plan. Of the $440 million of projects, the University of Kansas had $185.4 million worth of repairs, maintenance, replacements and construction at the Lawrence campus.

EARLIER: The state funding backlog to fix deteriorating university buildings sits at $825 million, according to a report to be delivered to the Kansas Board of Regents this week. The report examined buildings at all six regents institutions in the state. The University of Kansas' share of the backlog is more than $316 million — a figure accounting for both the Lawrence and medical center campuses. It’s a problem that’s existed for years, and it’s not likely to get better soon as the state continues to run out of money.
