After fatal accident, cross country runners in Texas district will stay on campus

Following an accident that killed a high school cross-country athlete, the Killeen (Texas) Independent School District has banned all running off-campus until further notice. Officials say new procedures could be in place by the start of next school year. Harker Heights High School freshman Amanda Ware, 14, was killed when a tractor-trailer went off the road and onto an island in the intersection where the girl was waiting for traffic to clear. School officials say cross-country running off-campus is a common practice statewide and nationwide. The district may consider busing athletes to local parks to run or have them run on campuses that have the space.
