Audit questions travel costs at New York City charter

A New York City charter school spent nearly $68,000 on "staff development" retreats in the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic, a state audit shows. Officials at the KIPP Academy Charter School in the Bronx insist the trips were educational and paid for by private donations, State Controller Thomas DiNapoli says his office can't verify the claims because of sloppy bookkeeping. In June 2005, KIPP sent 21 staffers to the town of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. In June 2006, 49 employees traveled to Nassau.
