L.A. District told to pay $2.4 million to student injured in football tryout

North Hollywood High student suffered a broken neck in 2008

From The Los Angeles Daily News: A North Hollywood High School student who suffered a broken neck during a football tryout has been awarded $2.4 million in an arbitration judgment against the Los Angeles Unified District. Johnny Rider was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear when he ran head first into padded blocking bags during the tryout in July 2008. Rider was not paralyzed, but he suffered a cervical spine fracture that required surgery. Rider, who is now a 19-year-old senior at North Hollywood, was awarded $1.5 million for pain and suffering, $700,000 for past and future medical expenses and $200,000 for loss of learning capacity.
