L.A. leader wants longer school days, more building-level decision making

Advocating longer school days, single-sex academies and more parent involvement, Los Angeles Schools Superintendent David L. Brewer says the school system has with pockets of excellence but is plagued by a deeply ingrained culture resistant to change. In his first "state of the schools" address, Brewer called for a return to the future: more localized decision making and less top-down management in the nation's second largest school system.
