Runoffs will decide the balance of power on L.A. School Board

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the union for teachers in the Los Angeles Unified District are gearing up for a runoff election that will determine whether the mayor gains a friendly majority on the school board--and a long-sought measure of control over the school system. Tuesday's election gave Villaraigosa-backed candidates one win and one loss; two races will be decided in runoffs on May 15, and the candidates endorsed by the mayor are considered favorites.
