Florida district's building plans hit snag over mineral rights

The Lake County (Fla.) School Board may decided to condemn one of its own properties to resolve a claim over mining rights at the site. In 1947, a couple donated 40 acres to the school district, but the couple retained the right to mine for oil and minerals there. The mining question remained unchallenged for decades until school officials and the town of Lady Lake began negotiations recently to build a school there. The couple's heirs are seeking $500,000 to relinquish the mineral rights, and the district may decide to use eminent domain litigation to resolve the claim.
