L.A. goes solar

TheLos Angeles Unified School District has launched a $350 million solar energy program. The nation's second-largest district wants to put enough solar panels on schools and other district buildings by 2012 to generate 50 megawatts of electricity—enough energy to power as many as 50,000 homes. The district will use the solar power to light schools and lower its $80 million annual electricity bill.
