Less soda drinking means less revenue for Wake County (N.C.) district

Apple juice and bottled water may be more healthful than soda, but Wake County, N.C., students aren't rushing to buy them in school. That's why the school district's new beverage contract with Pepsi Bottling Ventures is expected to pay less money than the one approved in 2001. Policies that have reduced access to soft drinks in schools have cut sharply into the school district's take. Under the new five-year deal, the school district estimates it could receive $296,000 a year in rebates compared with $500,000 a year in guaranteed money from the old deal.
