Library roof leak at University of Hawaii damages 1,000 books

Quick response of school's disaster preparedness team prevented worse problems

Up to 1,000 books at the University of Hawaii's Hamilton Library were splattered with water from roof leaks over the rainy weekend. Debris from a re-roofing project coupled with heavy rain caused drains to clog and overflow. A contractor responded with humidifiers and fans to assist staff with the cleanup. Buckets and trash cans were placed to catch drips. University officials say serious damage was averted by the swift response of the library's disaster preparedness team, bolstered after devastating flooding on campus in 2004.
