Longer school day begins for thousands of Chicago public school students

From The Chicago Tribune: Students have returned to classrooms in more than a third of Chicago's public schools, taking on additional classes scheduled to fill the longer school day that has created so much tension in teacher contract talks. Mayor Rahm Emanuel's push to lengthen the school day is short on details, so principals have flexibility over how to use the extra time. As a result, schedules for teachers and students vary widely across the district. For he majority of students, classes resume on Sept. 4.
