EARLIER: The Los Angeles Board of Education will pay at least $517,500 to buy out Supt. David L. Brewer midway through his four-year contract to run the nation's second-largest school system. No successor has been named, but board members and other civic leaders have said they expect that the No. 2 administrator, Ramon C. Cortines, will be offered the job at least on an interim basis.

Under pressure by civic leaders and members of his own school board, Los Angeles Schools Supt. David L. Brewer says he will leave his post rather than drag the district through a racially divisive fight. The Los Angeles Unified School District school board is reportedly hashing out the details of an exit package for Brewer. A retired Navy vice admiral, Brewer was supposed to bring military know-how and a deep passion for education to the job of running the nation's second-largest school district. Senior Deputy Supt. Ramon C. Cortines is widely expected to take over as interim superintendent, a job he held in 2000.
