Los Angeles superintendent proposes cutting 6 days from calendar

FromThe Los Angeles Times: Los Angeles schools Supt. Ramon C. Cortines has proposed cutting six days from the school year to help reduce an estimated $640 million deficit and avoid the need for widespread layoffs. The move would save the district $90 million and could spare up to 5,000 jobs. REACTION: Leaders of both the teachers and administrators unions in Los Angeles say they are aware of the financial crisis and are willing to negotiate over furloughs.
