Many South Dakota districts turn to four-day school weeks

Aug. 22, 2011
Rural districts seek ways to absorb state budget cuts

From The Sioux City Journal: With state budget cuts hurting many rural districts, the four-school week is becoming more common. In South Dakota this fall, fully one-fourth of school districts will have moved to some form of the abbreviated schedule. The schools insist that reducing class time is better than the alternatives and can be done without sacrificing academic performance. The downsizing in many districts is compounded by declines in population and enrollment.
