Marquette University lays off 25

Marquette University has laid off 25 members of its staff in an effort to reduce its overhead, according to a letter from Interim President Father Robert Wild to the Marquette community on Wednesday.

“Decisions such as these are among the toughest we face as university leaders. Although Marquette has operated with positive margins for the past 16 years, they have remained thin,” Wild wrote.

The decision is part of a larger plan by the Milwaukee-based Catholic and Jesuit school to reduce expenditures and combat rising tuition rates. “Today’s reductions, combined with future employee turnover, retirements and not filling some current vacancies is expected to bring us to a total reduction of approximately 105 positions out of our current employee base of 2,800,” Wild wrote.
