Faulty road plans make project costs soar at Alaska elementary school

Nineteen months ago theMatanuska-Susitna Borough (Alaska) school district's pick for the site of its newest school -- nestled in the middle of a developing subdivision called The Ranch -- seemed a perfect marriage of location and price. The developer donated the 15-acre site. But now borough managers say the cost for roads to the school, originally estimated at $90,000, has climbed to $8.4 million The original estimate was based on plans that officials now say should have been scrutinized more closely by borough planners.
