Memphis may convert one of its schools to a charter

Committee seeks court guidance on whether conversion is possible.

A Memphis school board committee has voted to seek court guidance on whether KIPP Diamond Academy could become a charter school. KIPP Academy was opened in June 2002 as a special contract school under Memphis City Schools. It is housed in Cypress Middle School. It would be the first existing public school in Tennessee to convert into a charter school.
