Willie Herenton will meet with Tennessee governor to talk about schools

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton wants Memphis City Schools to be under control of the mayor. He has an ally in Shelby County, Tenn., Mayor A C Wharton. Herenton and Wharton will meet with Gov. Phil Bredesen about their ideas. Herenton, a former Memphis City Schools superintendent, has pitched various education reforms during his 16-year tenure. In 2000 and 2003, he proposed lobbying the legislature for a mayor-appointed school board.
