Hourly workers laid off to shrink budget deficit

Trying to balance its end-of-year budget, the Miami-Dade School Board has cut district-wide overtime, laid off more than 200 hourly employees and dipped into the contingency reserves for $10 million. The steps came in response to statewide budget cuts that left Miami-Dade needing to slash $31 million reduction from this year's budget..
