Michigan commission considers plan to force school district mergers

A state commission inMichigan is considering a proposal that would let the state education chief order local school districts to merge if it can be shown the consolidation would save taxpayers at least 5 percent. The Legislative Commission on Government Efficiency calls the school consolidation plan "a potential recommendation." It's among many cost-cutting proposals intended to save hundreds of millions of dollars. The panel, appointed by legislative leaders, is to issue its report by the end of June.
