Milwaukee backs off talk of dissolving district Board tells superintendent to assess system's financial prospects

The Milwaukee School Board won’t explore plans to dissolve the district but will instead push forward with an examination of the district’s gloomy financial picture. The board told Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent William Andrekopoulos to develop financial projections for what the schools will face over the next three years. Last week, board members voted to ask for a report on guidelines for dissolving the school district--an idea that set off a storm of reaction.

EARLIER: The proposal endorsed by Milwaukee School Board members to explore dissolving the school district may or may not go forward. But the board vote has raised the temperature and sped up the pace of discussions about large-scale changes in how schools operate and how they’re paid for in Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee School Board has voted to begin looking into dissolving the school district. The completely unexpected 6-to-3 vote followed a gloomy assessment of the short- and long-term financial situation of the system from Superintendent William Andrekopoulos and several board members. The resolution calls for the administration to examine state and federal guidelines for dissolving the school district and who would be responsible for educating children in Milwaukee if that happened.
